If you have been following along with the blog, you will know that I recently canceled my American Express Platinum Card.  Not because it didn’t provide value, but because it provided less value for me after the first year.

One of the benefits that I will miss most will be the access to the Priority Pass and Centurion Lounges because I love starting my trips relaxing in a lounge, rather than waiting at the gate.  I actually have a trip upcoming in a couple of weeks so I was hopeful that it would take some time for American Express to process the paperwork back to Priority Pass so that I could use the lounges one last time.

As a guy that doesn’t leave things to chance, I called Priority Pass with the membership number I was assigned by American Express to see if the pass was still valid.

It wasn’t.  They had canceled it.

All within 24 hours of processing the cancellation.

I hadn’t expected that it would take that much time to process the cancellation but less than 24 hours is impressive.

This is all to say that if you have a trip upcoming that coincides with the cancellation of your American Express Platinum Card, be aware that your Priority Pass privileges will be revoked almost immediately.

  1. Completely the opposite for me. My amex platinum still works in the lounges a year after cancellation. I’m wondering if they are tallying up fees somewhere and will send me a bill one day.

    • I’ve also had that happen with a Priority Pass card but it was issued from a US credit card. The Priority Pass card eventually hit the expiry date with no replacement. They have yet to send me a bill (knock on wood).

  2. I have cancelled my AMEX Plat card years ago but still continue receiving a new Priority Pass card. Shall I continue using it until they catch it? ;). It doesn’t incur any fee or has to connect to a valid AMEX card when I enter the lounges right?

    • Hi Ben, I have had that happen to me before but with a BMO card. I did put through one lounge visit and never ended up getting charged so I think it’s possible to have that access continue and not get charged. As a word of warning, Priority Pass still has your name and can likely get your particulars from AMEX if they asked so if you end up racking up a bunch of visits, it is feasible that they come after you through collections.
