As we approach the holidays, some of you may be lucky enough to be heading out on vacation, so when you come across a discount code that can save you a decent amount of money, you tend to pay attention.

Normally, I would say that it makes sense to book directly with a hotel rather than an Online Travel Agency (OTA) IF you are chasing status.  This is because if you book through an OTA most hotels will not count the stay towards your status qualification.  However, I have realized through my interactions with a lot of readers, that most are just looking to save money however they can … status be damned.

You could also be going somewhere that isn’t serviced by any chain hotels so there’s no need to worry about obtaining/retaining status.  In that case 9% off is 9% off.

I have found that the code works for every hotel that I have tried, however, the only stipulation is that you have to pay in full at the time of booking in order to apply the coupon.  Now this doesn’t mean you have to book a non-refundable rate, just that you need to make payment at time of booking.  In my experience, OTAs like Hotels.com offer the same or better cancellation policy than chain hotels.

If you want to pay at the hotel, you can’t apply the coupon and it makes sense.  How can Hotels.com provide a 9% discount if they aren’t collecting the funds?

The other restriction is that you must book by November 19, 2017, and travel by December 17, 2017.

In practice, I tried applying this coupon past December 17th and it looks like it works until December 24th … but your mileage may vary.

How To Book

  1. First, go to Hotels.com and start the search for your hotel room
  2. Select your hotel and room type and click on “Let’s book”
  3. If given the choice, make sure to choose “Pay In Full Now”
  4. On the right hand side, you will see the pricing for the hotel.  Look for the the “Apply a coupon code” text link and use code “SAVE9NOV17“.
  5.  If you are successful, you will see a message that your coupon has been applied which will include the 9% discount off the room rate (does not include taxes).

If you are looking for a way to save some money for hotel stays up to December 17th (or December 24th if you’re lucky), give Hotels.com a try with promo code “SAVE9NOV17” but hurry.  The coupon expires on November 19th!!!

  1. I suggest you buy hotels.com/hotels.ca gift cards for less than their face value or when a sale is running to use together with coupon codes.

    Currently: https://ca.hotels.com/page/giftcards/?intlid=HOME%20%3A%3A%20header_main_section

Buy USD (or CAD) 50 hotels gift card and get USD (CAD) 10 bonus.

However, this year’s bonus is not as good as last year’s as according to the T & C, you can’t merge the $10 gift card with the $50 gift card or other gift cards. Last year’s promo allowed us to combine the $10 and $50 + other gift cards together.

Earlier this year, I bought several $100 hotels.com gift cards from Amazon and Ebay for $80 each. I then used them on top of a 10% hotels.com coupon code (it’s more like 8% as the discount is taken pre-tax).
